Washington Sundar has complimented Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra and India head coach Gautam Gambhir for being essential to his development as a batter after his game-winning performance in India’s first ODI against England at Edgbaston.
India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after hitting a target of 259 with six wickets left, and the all-rounder remained unbeaten on 52. Sundar came in at number five after captain Shubman Gill left injured on 80, leaving India still needing 110 runs. He then put up an unbroken 102-run stand with Player of the Match Axar Patel to take the visitors home.
Over the years, Washington Sundar has been assigned to a number of different batting positions.
In Test cricket, he has batted as high as No. 4, although in Twenty20 Internationals, he is usually used as a finisher. He adapted to the team’s demands against England and played a composed innings under pressure.
“The fact that I play different roles is exciting,” Washington Sundard remarked, acknowledging his versatility and saying he enjoys the challenge of batting in different situations. Few people have the opportunity to play multiple parts.
I have the opportunity to assume those various positions and experience those various circumstances. Of course, I do everything in my power to support the team’s victory. India Today cited Sundar as stating, “As I mentioned, it is exciting to be in different situations and different phases of the game.”
Gautam Gambhir has had a big impact on Washington Sundar batting since taking over as India’s head coach in July 2024.
The Tamil Nadu cricket player revealed that Gambhir helped him better understand his batting abilities. He also praised Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra for fostering his personal and professional development.
“Gauti bhai always helped me grasp my game and what I could accomplish with the bat in particular. Washington Sundar said, “Even Ashish Nehra at GT has always made sure… he has helped me understand myself a lot more, be it as a person or as a cricketer on the whole.”
After an impressive victory in the series opener, team India will attempt to secure the series with yet another great performance in the second ODI of the series, scheduled for July 16 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
