Concerns were voiced by Ravichandran Ashwin regarding the treatment of 31-year-old left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who has only participated in 19 Test matches since making his debut over nine years ago.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at Galle International Stadium. The second Test is set to start at the Sinhalese Sports Club on August 23. Despite a significant performance gap within the bowling unit—various spinners were given radically different opportunities during the game—the victory was achieved.
Why Kuldeep’s bowling opportunities were restricted
Ashwin gave an explanation of the technical rationale behind the match’s uneven use of spinners. In just his second Test match, Manav Suthar claimed ten wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja claimed four. In comparison, Yadav let up 103 runs while taking 1 wicket in 25 overs.
Kuldeep’s confidence and the captain’s priorities
Ashwin emphasised a particular instance from the game that demonstrated Kuldeep’s lack of support. After lunch, KL Rahul made the choice to start Kuldeep Yadav, but this was after Shubman had left the pitch. This sequence revealed the captain’s priorities, according to Ashwin.
Ashwin’s last evaluation focused on what he perceived as the team management’s basic lack of faith in Kuldeep. The seasoned off-spinner made a clear link between the lack of support and the more general issue of being chosen for the next Test.
Saransh Jain was expected to make his debut if Yadav was benched during the Galle Test. Nonetheless, the team management was persuaded to keep Yadav for the Colombo Test by former Indian stars Venkatesh Prasad and Cheteshwar Pujara.
