Todd Greenberg, the CEO of Cricket Australia, has highlighted a fundamental tension in modern cricket administration: the need to protect the broadcast revenue that depends on bilateral one-day internationals while simultaneously giving them greater importance.
“I think the principle of his comments is that the games that are played need to matter and have context and jeopardy,” Greenberg said after ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta made similar statements during a Cricket Australia staff meeting during a recent trip to Melbourne.
That is our core belief. However, we’re also realistic enough to understand that bilateral ODIs account for a sizable portion of our broadcast agreements, so if we’re going to move them and create more jeopardy and meaning, we’ll need to figure out what to replace them with and how to replace the associated revenues,” stated Greenberg, who was cited by Cricinfo.
There are both short-term and long-term aspects to that. However, the idea behind what he’s stating is correct. It’s crucial to add danger and significance to the games we play. However, it’s not a simple solution,” he continued.
Greenberg has backed Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald’s call for larger squads for the 2027 ODI World Cup in addition to the bilateral ODI issue.
According to Greenberg, CA was in favour of reducing the number of teams in the ODI World Cup while increasing the number of Associate nations participating in the T20 World Cup.
“We have vigorously advocated. Andrew has made it quite evident to me that he wants to hold that role. We have thus forwarded that feedback to the ICC. We’re going to have some talks with them, and I believe that several nations have stated that those squad sizes are crucial in light of the change. Greenberg stated, “I don’t know a lot of the background other than that was presented at the ICC conference, so that’s an issue on their table.”
I’m assuming it’s all about trying to make the World Cups profitable. Additionally, I saw some recent remarks indicating that some of the associates are not satisfied. I understand that. I believe the ICC is planning to provide a means for more Associates to view the T20 World Cup rather than the ODI World Cup. We were shown it that way. “We would be in favour of that approach,” he said.
