Priyansh Arya, a left-handed opening batsman for the Punjab Kings, spoke to the media about the team’s downfall. Arya disagreed with the notion that any one player was to blame for the team’s problems when discussing personal accountability for the collapse.
Punjab Kings won six of their first seven IPL 2026 league phase games, including one washout against Kolkata Knight Riders, to secure the top spot in the standings. However, the club saw a dramatic decline, losing six games in a row, which eventually kept them from qualifying for the postseason.
In their most recent league match, the team overcame the collapse to overcome the Lucknow Super Giants by seven wickets thanks to an undefeated century from Shreyas Iyer. “We didn’t suffer because of any individual.” It’s a cooperative game. The game of cricket is one of momentum.
IndiaTV cited Arya as stating, “Momentum is key in a big tournament like the IPL.” We were performing well in both categories, so we didn’t do anything wrong. In the end, only one team can prevail,” he continued.
Priyansh Arya disputes any personal accountability for the fall of Punjab.
Arya’s statement addressed allegations that had surfaced during Punjab’s losing streak, including some accusations linking specific players to the collapse.
The 24-year-old hitter emphasised that the club had performed well in both batting and bowling throughout the early stages of the competition, suggesting that the team’s subsequent losses were more a reflection of the unpredictability of T20 cricket than of a structural collapse.
Priyansh Arya praised Ponting’s method of instruction.
Priyansh Arya also complimented Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting, who has guided the squad for two seasons, on the coaching environment. The batter highlighted the independence and support of the coaching staff during the trying period.
“He grants us complete liberty. On the pitch, he encouraged us to express ourselves. He advises us to put in a lot of effort as well. Thus, it has been excellent, and there are no limitations either. He has given us the freedom to do what we like,” Arya said.
Priyansh Arya had an exceptional individual IPL 2025 season, scoring 475 runs at a strike rate of about 180 in 17 games. Punjab Kings purchased him for INR 3.8 crore at the IPL 2025 auction.
