Claims that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can only play in the shortest version of international cricket have been refuted by Matthew Hayden, who is in favour of the teen’s success in all three forms. Born on March 27, 2011, Sooryavanshi has already made a significant impact at the highest level despite his youth.

Sooryavanshi’s confidence, courage, mental toughness, and ability to execute under duress were highlighted by Matthew Hayden as crucial traits that will enable him to excel in lengthier forms. The former Australia opener praised the teen’s will to take on obstacles at the highest level.

“I disagree with those who claim he might simply be a short-format player. I think Vaibhav might also be successful in the game’s extended format. Fitness is undoubtedly a component of that, but mental toughness is more important.

One of the things I adore about Vaibhav is that, at the age of 15, he had the guts and dedication to not only compete in but also excel in a large, spectacular, blockbuster tournament like the IPL. According to NDTV Sports, Hayden stated, “That tells me he has many of the right ingredients to become a world-class player.”

Local and international performances by Sooryavanshi in 2026

Sooryavanshi became the youngest Indian player to make an international debut when he was selected for the Twenty20 International cricket series against England. The young man has quickly risen thru the ranks and already made an impression on the world stage.

The teenager won Player of the Series after scoring 151 runs in three Twenty20 International matches during India’s 3-0 series victory against Zimbabwe in July 2026. This performance demonstrated his ability to consistently perform at an international level against top opponents.

Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30 while representing the Rajasthan Royals in the 2026 Indian Premier League, including five fifties and one century. In addition to being the tournament’s leading run scorer and setting a season record with 72 sixes, he also won the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker, and Super Sixes trophies.

We’re excited to watch him develop: Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden acknowledged the adolescent’s exceptional talent and his passion for personal development. The former opener noted that there is still much work to be done at the highest level, despite Sooryavanshi’s remarkable promise.

“Vaibhav has a huge talent pool, and as instructors or broadcasters, we’ve all been ecstatic to see his growth. However, he has discovered that there is still work to be done at the highest level, and I have no doubt that he will accept that. Hayden stated, “He’s a fantastic young player with exceptional potential, and in the end, it will be up to him how he wants to shape his career.”
