The ECB’s first choice to become England’s next Test head coach is Stephen Fleming. After speaking with managing director Rob Key, Fleming is expected to take over for his countryman after leaving his position with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) earlier this month, just after Brendon McCullum was freed of his responsibilities with England’s Test team.
In addition to coaching CSK’s sister teams in the SA20 and MLC, Fleming is a five-time IPL champion. After stints as a player for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire and as a coach for Southern Brave, he has a wealth of knowledge in English cricket and has periodically served as a temporary consultant coach for New Zealand.
Fleming’s relationship with his old New Zealand teammate will be crucial since McCullum is still England’s white-ball coach, at least until his contract expires at the end of next year. In addition to being good friends, Fleming and McCullum have similar business interests.
Whether Fleming will take over in time for England’s Test series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19 at Headingley, is still up in the air. The ECB is willing to wait if required in order to make sure they have the best candidate in place to assist England in defeating Australia in the Ashes series next summer.
Before that series begins, England will play eleven Test matches: three against Pakistan (August–September), three in South Africa (December–January), two in Bangladesh (February), the 150th anniversary Test in Melbourne (March), and one at home against Bangladesh (May). Since they last won the Ashes in 2015, they have specifically targeted the series.
Choosing a new Test captain will be one of Fleming’s most crucial choices.
Following his sudden retirement last month, Ben Stokes recommended Harry Brook, his vice captain, for the position. However, Brook already captains England’s white-ball sides, and the ECB is thinking of temporarily returning the position to Joe Root.
This week, Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald conjectured that Stokes might yet be persuaded to change his mind by England’s new coach. “The fairytale would be that he comes back out of retirement and takes on one more Ashes, and builds a lot of hype on the way in,” McDonald told SEN. “To me, he’s still got a lot of good cricket left in him.”
Andy Flower, who was once the front-runner to succeed McCullum, declared he was “very happy” in his positions with London Spirit and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and ruled himself out of the running. Tom Moody, Richard Dawson, and Jonathan Trott were among the other hopefuls, but Fleming is currently regarded as the overwhelming frontrunner.
Dawson or Trott might still have a place in the England squad, according to the ECB. Dawson, who previously served as Matthew Mott’s assistant coach in white-ball cricket, has impressed England’s management since taking over at Glamorgan, where he is contracted until the conclusion of the 2028 season. Trott left his position with Afghanistan and is now a free agent.
Another candidate associated with the position, Justin Langer, said on Tuesday that he had not heard from the ECB.
While Shoaib Bashir, Emilio Gay, and Ollie Robinson have been competing in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, the majority of England’s Test players are participating in the Hundred season, which continues until August 16.
