Charlie Dean, who looks to be Nat Sciver-Brunt’s long-term replacement and filled in admirably as England’s captain during his injury this summer, thinks she has evolved as a leader in the months leading up to The Hundred 2026. The 25-year-old England all-rounder will skipper London Spirit once more when the local T20 tournament begins on Tuesday, July 21.
During the group stages, which end on August 12, each team plays eight games. Thanks to Heather Knight’s new role as general manager, Dean will have another opportunity to grow in the role without having to deal with an injured mentor on the field. Dean now has more freedom to work independently while still getting guidance from the former England captain thanks to Knight’s transfer to an off-field position.
“I’ve really enjoyed this year.” I feel like I’ve grown a lot personally, I know my game pretty well, and I can consider other people. According to Dean, who was cited by ESPN, “I’ve gained a bit more confidence with my public speaking, and bits like that… things that would probably have challenged me a lot more in previous years.”

Charlie Dean journey as captain was significantly impacted by Knight. In 2025, Knight became a player and advisor at Somerset, where they are now teammates. Opportunities to captain are few and far between, but I always loved the chance to step up in other leadership ways.
Their bond extends beyond the home circuit to international duty, where Dean has developed as a vital member in England’s leadership structure. “This has been a great chance for me to see how I’ve developed and see where it leads,” Charlie Dean remarked.

Knight’s mentoring role gives Dean the best of both worlds: autonomy on the field during games and wisdom from one of England’s greatest leaders off it.
On Tuesday, July 21, MI London, the most successful team in both categories with three men’s crowns and two women’s trophies, took on Sunrisers Leeds in the tournament’s opening match. The final will take place at Lord’s on Sunday, August 16. Dean hopes that as captain, she will keep improving and guide London Spirit deep into the competition.
