Stuart Broad, a former fast bowler, has urged England to reevaluate the composition of their ODI team after their defeat to India in the first game in Birmingham on Tuesday, July 14. The Three Lions’ defeat by six wickets added to their dismal performance in 50-over cricket during the preceding few years.
Broad has recommended that England swap out a spinner for another seam-bowling alternative. At the moment, Harry Brook’s squad starts with up to five spinners, which is unnecessary in both English conditions and South Africa, where the Cricket World Cup is being held.
“England is playing like they are seventh in the world rankings. They must gain more expertise in the player positions. In the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, bowlers who are taller and faster will be the ones who cause the most damage.
Stuart Broad stated on Sky Sports Cricket, “I would be leaning towards playing an extra seamer instead of one of the spinners because it gives that bowler experience and exposure to match situations given the make-up and balance of this side with Rashid, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks, along with the part-time spin options of Jacob Bethell and Joe Root.”
Instead of relying too heavily on guys like Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer, the former player who is now an analyst stressed the importance of having a bowler who can take wickets in the middle overs. Sam Curran is the third seamer for England, but his bowling style is better suited for the death than the middle.
The 2019 world champions’ bowling department has significantly improved when Brydon Carse returned from injury. The Durham seamer may be selected in place of a spinner for the second ODI in Cardiff due to his skill with the bat in the closing moments. “Taking 10 wickets in an ODI, particularly through that middle period is difficult.”
I consider Archer to be our best white-ball bowler and a natural wicket-taker. Wickets can be taken by tongue. Rashid is capable of taking wickets. To support that bunch, though, I believe England needs one more fast bowler. Although Sam Curran is an excellent cricket player, he is not a first-change seam bowler.
To avoid constantly going to Archer, England needs someone to come through in the middle overs, bowl bouncers and seamers, and take the outside edge.

There is a chance that England won’t automatically qualify for the 2027 Cricket World Cup. Brook’s team is currently rated ninth in the ICC ODI Rankings, which is the last spot that guarantees a spot in the tournament.
