According to reports, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have entered the competition to recruit Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya prior to the 2027 Indian Premier League, potentially creating one of the greatest trade stories in IPL history.

The blockbuster trade involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav between the Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants just weeks prior, indicating an aggressive trading window ahead of the upcoming season, is what prompted the Yellow Army’s quick interest in the ace all-rounder.

Since the season ended in May, the IPL trade market has been extremely active. Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav have completed a massive player swap between the Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals, which might have a big impact on the tournament’s power dynamics.

After being the most expensive player in IPL history at the 2025 mega auction, Pant accepted a lowered salary of INR 15 crore, which was substantially less than the INR 27 crore deal he was given. Kuldeep Yadav’s current contract value of INR 13.50 crore was paid to Lucknow in exchange. Now that CSK has entered the Pandya bidding war, there is more conjecture over the franchise’s rebuilding intentions.

But it’s far from a two-horse contest for the top all-around player. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad are said to have not contacted the Mumbai Indians out of the seven IPL teams that have expressed interest in Hardik.

With six victories from 14 games, CSK concluded the 2026 season in ninth place, necessitating immediate roster changes. Pandya is seen by the team as a possible key acquisition to rebuild their team in the wake of MS Dhoni.

No franchise and the Mumbai Indians have struck a formal deal for Pandya’s services, despite mounting rumours. Timelines are still unknown, but both parties are negotiating terms.
