The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will assess Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the coaching staff following India’s historic T20I series defeats. Starting on July 23, the head coach will take a holiday from the three-match Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe.
India has already dropped six games in the format under new captain Shreyas Iyer, including a 2-0 defeat to Ireland and a 3-0 defeat to England with one match remaining.
The BCCI has scheduled a review meeting for next week, following the conclusion of India’s tour of England. At least one member of Gambhir’s support staff is reportedly set to leave the team; one coach has already held discussions with an IPL side and may move there in the coming months.
The performance of other Indian coaches, such as Ryan ten Doeschate, Sitanshu Kotak, Sairaj Bahutule, and Morne Morkel, will also be examined.
Gautam Gambhir, however, has backed the team’s reset strategy and said that the change will take some time.
“We just haven’t played well,” he said.The starting lineup from the T20 World Cup final has seen numerous alterations. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah do not exist. It takes some time to perform the reset.
At a press conference following the game, Gautam Gambhir stated, “We ultimately look only at results, and no doubt results are important in international cricket, but we have to be practical as well.” Gambhir insisted that despite several failures, India does not turn into a horrible side in just four games.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate did not hold back after the team’s nine-wicket loss in Bristol.
“We have spoken so much about adaptability, it’s easy to say we need to adapt, it’s easy to say but really it’s a point now where we need to understand the process, what is needed to make those adaptations,” ten Doeschate said during a news conference.
The former Netherlands all-rounder questioned whether the team’s objective is to just be a team that “smashes 250 in India and looks great hitting an 80-meter six at Eden Gardens,” or if they have the mental ability to fight for runs in challenging circumstances like Manchester and Southampton.
Former India batsman and head coach of the National Cricket Academy VVS Laxman is expected to travel for the Zimbabwe series. Since Gambhir left the Zimbabwe assignment, Indian T20I management has undergone a major transformation.
After the fifth and final Twenty20 International on Saturday, Team India will play England in a three-match ODI series that concludes on July 19 before the review process begins.
